THE SPOILS OF WAR. I go back and forth on this war we're presently embroiled in. I have generally opposed it but not terribly fervently because of my ambivalence about arguments both for but more frequently against the war. Having said that, I wholeheartedly agree with the idea that one shouldn't ignore the consequences of any war, no matter how nobly conceived and technologically advanced. Look here for troubling pictures of the results of war (mostly from Al Jazeera). This is not necessarily to say that the War on Iraq may not prove in the end to be on balance beneficial to the U.S. and perhaps even to the people of Iraq. But we must never forget the human costs of war; we must never forget that a humane war is an Orwellian oxymoron. We must never forget that even smart bombs kill kids. If, after considering all of this one still supports the war, fine. But don't pretend these pictures aren't real and the suffering they portray doesn't matter.
