NORTH KOREA ASKS FOR ANOTHER APOLOGY FROM JAPAN. This time it is for taxing the Chongryun, a pro-DPRK organization in Japan.
North Korea condemned Japanese authorities on Monday for levying local taxes on the main pro-Pyongyang Korean citizens group in Japan, asserting that the Japanese government is pursuing a hostile policy toward Koreans. The Chongryun has a somewhat anomalous status because Japanese-Koreans have generally not been allowed to become Japanese citizens (even if they wanted to). However, to castigate a foreign country for taxing organizations in said country seems a bit cheeky to me. Perhaps I am merely ignorant of international law on this subject. If so, please enlighten me.
In a statement distributed by the official Korean Central News Agency, a North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman said Japan must "apologize for all the damage" caused to the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan.
