ECONOMIST BACKS BARABRA BUSH?

We report, you decide:

Said the Bush family matron (to much criticism, comparisons to Marie Antionette etc.):
"What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality."
...
"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this -- this is working very well for them."

Said Edward Glaeser, "a Harvard professor who specializes in urban economics":
"We have an obligation to people, not to places,"
...
"Given just how much, on a per capita basis, it would take to rebuild New Orleans to its former glory, lots of residents would be much [better off] with $10,000 and a bus ticket to Houston."
Question: are both statements equally repugnant? Why, or why not? Discuss.

Comments:
If I followed anyone around with reporters and copied down every word and took them out of context, I'm sure even "saints" make mistakes.

The problem here is that DEMOCRAT leaders in Louisiana's southern cities, parishes, in Baton Rouge were overwhelmed by this 500-year storm and the mostly-DEMOCRAT media had to find a REPUBLICAN scapegoat.

So, let's pick on Dubya's mom... Surely that's fair... And it's unlikely she'll strike back... She's old...

The fact of the matter is that the economy in Louisiana (or Mississippi or Alabama for that matter) has not been as strong as in Texas or Massachusetts or Washington State.

There have been poor people living in that part of the American South for many years. Many generations of some families have relied on government checks--for whatever reasons--and to many of them this storm and the welcome they received in Texas is really like a fresh start.

They lost all they never had and have to start over afresh--with the help of people willing to take them in and help them get a job and a home as quickly as possible.

Those who want someone to blame in my presence can start by telling me why (a) the school buses drowned, (b) why buses ran all day to bring the poor to the stadium and the convention hall instead of Baton Rouge, and (c) why the Mayor of New Orleans found more time for Oprah than he did for those stranded in his city...

Sorry about that KL...
