Many of us are familiar with how satellite photos of the Korean peninsula reveal a dramatic contrast between North and South with the lights shining brightly in the latter and being nearly non-existent in the former.

Here is another illustration of this phenomenon. Taken by a student of mine, this photo is of the bridge that crosses the Yalu River between Dandong and Sinuiju.

Note how the lights disappear right at the middle of the river. Any guesses as to which side is which?
